January 2022

New Sweets for 2022

As a candy lover who doesn't get out much--and who tries to avoid sugar as much as possible for health reasons--I rarely get to see what new candies or sweets are released each year, but I'm definitely always interested! The sweet tooth runs deep in my family and it's super hard for me to say no if it's already in my house. How about you?

New Party Games for 2022

A new year comes with new opportunities for game nights with family and friends--whether they are in person or via Zoom. While we need to stay safe and continue to practice measures to protect those we live when infection numbers climb, we can still enjoy playing some cool-looking new games with our loved ones online.

Cats Are Little Furry Arsonists

Cat owners are constantly trying to keep their cats off tables, countertops and stoves. Why would anyone want feet that have been digging through a litter box where they cook and eat, after all? It turns out there's another reason why we need to make this our goal: cats start a lot of fires. According to officials in South Korea, cats have caused over 100 house fires there alone.

Amanda Gorman Shares New Poem

We recently discussed Amanda Gorman's new collection of poems, and now that the New Year is here, the poet has given us another new poem. It's called "New Day's Lyric" and she performed it in an empty theater in a partnership with Instagram. Gorman says she wrote the poem not only as a celebration of the New Year we're now living in, but to also honor the pain of the last year we've all endured.

The Best Noodle Alternatives

Lots of people are nixing the carbs right now as part of a New Year's resolution, but even if you aren't, it's always a great time to try new things and especially implement more veggies into your daily life. Noodles are my favorite foods, but they make my blood sugar spike unlike anything else, so I tend to go for alternative noodles whenever possible.

Cancel Student Loans

People are not going to be able to pay off their students loans anytime soon--not only in this economy, but with the price tags they were sold. So many people with degrees can't afford their payments, and not just because of stagnant wages. The price of these loans have gone up between 100-200% in the last few decades, ensuring that no one will be able to afford payments unless they make super high wages, which is unlikely with so many people turning to higher learning in the first place.

New Year's Sales Continue

January is fully here and the New Year's sales all continue to land themselves in inboxes near you! From Bath & Body Works to Yankee Candle, Goose Creek to Candle-lite, there are sales on candles and other smelly-good products just about everywhere right now. The opportunity to make your home smell like peppermints or marshmallows is definitely here for those interested.

The Worst of the Worst

Analyzing our favorite characters and finding out everything from what zodiac sign they'd be (sure, Stewie's likely a Scorpio, but I bet he's a Capricorn rising!) to their favorite color is fun pastime for many people. We love to think about what the worst and best things they've ever done are only to be shocked when they do something even more outrageous in the future.

People Are Asking If They're Jerks On The Internet

People are sharing the AITA threads on Reddit all over the Internet right now, but that's not the most mind-boggling thing happening. No, it's that people are sharing their most humiliating or dark or even cruel moments online and asking strangers to judge them on the Internet. A few years ago, had I heard about this, I certainly wouldn't have believed it. I like to believe that everyone is doing their best, even when they make mistakes.

Crafting with Feminism

As I set out to look for craft projects that combine fun and creativity with dismantling the patriarchy, white supremacy and colonialism--a combination that I think would be great for many of us as we stay at home this winter--I ran across this book from 2016. It's called Crafting with Feminism, and it's written by Bonnie Burton. While I don't think it's exactly what I was looking for, it definitely has some fun-looking projects in it.
