Radioactive Waste 817 - Samantha Gateman Joins Research Team At Western University To Work On Preventing Corrosion In Dry Casks

The temporary storage of spent nuclear fuel in special steel and concrete drums called dry casks is necessary because there are only a few experimental facilities for permanent geological storage of the spent fuel which is piling up onsite at nuclear power plants.

Texas All But Outlaws Abortion

The Texas abortion ban is a new low, effectively putting a price on pregnant people's heads. Not only is abortion being banned at six weeks--long before many people even know they are pregnant!--but they are even rewarding those who "tattle" on those who get abortions with $10,000 as long as those individuals sue anyone who helped the pregnant person get the abortion. This seems like something out of a Mad Max comic, not the real world, and yet... here we are.

The White Ermine Moth

Lately I'm all about moths. I love when they land on me and I'll sit and talk with them until they're ready to move on. I fell deeply in love with the pink Rosy Maple moth, it saddened me to learn how short their lives are, which only makes me appreciate their beauty even more.

Green Tea Treats

A beloved microbakery and coffee shop near where I live just announced their fall specials and one of them is a Strawberry Matcha beverage! I have to admit this seems odd for a fall drink but I'm also here for it. It think it sounds like a great drink and it made me wonder about the kinds of green tea treats that Seattle has to offer.

The Return of Game Night

Those of us who dearly missed our game nights who are now vaccinated and ready to have them again are feeling joyous--but also anxious. It seemed all too easy to get into the habit of being alone and wary of company, which is disturbing, but what's even more worrisome is how we have to ease back into having company and fellowship. We will get there if we have patience.

80s Transformers Now on YouTube

From My Little Pony to Strawberry Shortcake, Transformers to Care Bears, I have totally binged plenty of 80s cartoons on YouTube over the years. It's how I introduced my child to the shows. Some of them are super hard to find anywhere else--especially Care Bears in Wonderland, which isn't available elsewhere as far as I know. But the quality is usually poor from someone else's uploads and it's not as fun to watch.

All The LGBTQIA Graphic Novels

Is anyone else just feeling done with straight characters right now, particularly in graphic novels? Last year I started feeling the same way about non-POC characters and now, after reading a few graphic novels that I really feel represented in, I kind of feel done with straight characters. I'm not saying they shouldn't be written... but after a lifetime of straight saturation, I think I'd be fine just reading about all queer characters for the foreseeable future.

Apple Drinks for Fall

It's no secret that people are angry about Starbucks's replacement drinks, especially lovers of the S'mores and Salted Caramel Mocha drinks. It is hard to deal with the loss of these flavors we love, but their replacements have been incredible. The new Apple Crisp Macchiato is SO good. It tastes just like an apple crisp. It really has me in the mood for more apple drinks, but where can we get them?

Bring Back Processing Poetry

This past year and a half has been difficult on almost everyone, and many believe we are at the brink of a mental health crisis. My teen and I were just having a discussion about processing feelings and the things people do--from staying busy to listening to music or talking about emotions with friends. We decided that keeping busy can be helpful, especially if you're feeling stuck, but that it's also important to sit with feelings, feel them and process in a meaningful way.

September Craft Ideas

September is one of the best months for craft-making! You can focus on the change of the seasons, back-to-school themes or any upcoming holiday seasonal theme you like. Feel like making Christmas crafts? No sweat. Halloween is a given! It's also one of the best times of the year to make crafts from things you find, from apple stamping to wreath making.

It's simple to find all kinds of apple, fox and other fall-themed craft ideas this time of year, but some people don't want to go the conventional route, which is fine! Here are some other fun September craft ideas:

New IL Puppy Mill Ban

The fact that puppy mills continue to be allowed to sell so many animals in most states is worrisome, especially given how pet overpopulation leaves so many animals vulnerable and homeless every year. Some states are working to end the sale of puppy mill pets, which aren't limited to puppies but also can include cat versions of the same facilities. Banning puppies and kittens from being sold this way in pet stores helps limit the access that puppy mills have to the public.

Watering Your Garden Helps Critters

Did you know that watering your garden in the hot months doesn't just help your crops and flowers out, but it also helps sustain your local wild animals? It's a little embarrassing to admit that it never occurred to me before, but when you water your plants, you're actually helping to maintain the ecosystem by keeping the soil damp enough for creatures like insects and worms to keep making their paths through the soil, too.

Cute Frog Stories

Over the weekend, my family and I caught a little frog cooling off in our basement. It was incredibly hot. We had heat advisories for days. It was understandable that this little one wanted a nice, cool place too get cozy but we also worried that they would die of hunger and dehydration if left in our basement, so we took them outside.
